About Andrew J. Mann
Andrew was born in Arlington, Virginia and grew up in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland with his mother, father, older brother, and two younger sisters and had a wonderful childhood. He attended Northern High School in Calvert County, Maryland and had many significant early accomplishments in the field of computing and mathematics. He won first place in the Junior Division of the Calvert County Science Fair for Mathematics in 1991 at the age of 12, completed a Theoretical Foundations of Computer Science summer course at Johns Hopkins University at age 14, earned first place in Southern Maryland Electric Company's Computer Bowl in 1995 at the age of 16, and achieved a certificate of excellence in 1997 for his work in Northern High School's Mentorship Program in the field of computers. These early successes were just the start of a lifetime of both career and personal successes.
Andrew worked in several technology related jobs before landing his dream job at Mythic Entertainment as a System Administrator. He quickly rose through the ranks at Mythic and was soon a Lead Engineer, and then a Technical Director, helping launch Warhammer Online. In 2010 he moved, along with his future wife Aaryn to Austin, TX to work at Electronic Arts Bioware as a Technical Director, helping launch Star Wars: The Old Republic. He then moved on in 2012 to Divvy Cloud where he served as Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder until his passing in April of 2016. During his time at Mythic Entertainment, Electronic Arts Bioware, and Divvy Cloud he formed strong bonds with colleagues and served as a mentor to many. He was a brilliant programmer, and a strong leader who's ultimate goal was always to unite everyone together under the common interest at hand to efficiently solve problems and effectively complete projects.
During his career he traveled the globe working, and this inspired him to continue to travel recreationally in his personal life. He traveled to South Korea, China, Thailand, Italy, Greece, Germany, France, Ireland, Switzerland, Jamaica, Canada, and all over the United States creating countless memories and taking thousands of photographs along the way. When he wasn't working, learning, or traveling, he enjoyed many hobbies such as gaming, photography, cooking, tinkering with various engineering projects, and spending time with his wife Aaryn, as well as numerous family and friends. He loved to try new things and did routinely, such as hiking, sky diving, snorkeling, and obtaining a certification as a deep water diver.
In the years after his 2011 cancer diagnosis and before his passing, he strove to complete his college education at the University of Maryland University College. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 2016. What is so miraculous about this achievement is that he completed his degree while working full time as well as undergoing chemotherapy, and multiple surgeries. He earned a 3.9 GPA, and was awarded Magna Cum Laude honors. Andrew's spirited determination amazed everyone around him, and it is in that same spirit that The Andrew J. Mann Scholarship Foundation was created.
